General Assembly

When:
Monday, April 2, 2012 (All day)

Our General Assembly (GA) models that of the original Occupy Wall Street GA. An open, participatory process, this is the governing body of Occupy Baltimore, where the main decision making is conducted. Finances, actions, and other important issues that impact Occupy Baltimore as a whole, are all brought to the GA. Yet that is not all, announcements are made, and report backs from workgroups are shared.

A proposal becomes a resolution only when it is approved through the mechanics of Occupy Oakland’s collective decision-making process. If the community passes a proposal, then it becomes an official Occupy Oakland resolution.

We operate on a consensus model. Proposals are brought to the GA and only become a resolution when approved by consensus. Proposals that are passed then become official Occupy Baltimore resolutions. In this way we engage in a horizontal, rather than hierarchical, democratic model. Everyone has a voice in discussions and a vote. Everyone is treated equally, and everyone's vote carries the same weight. In this manner we are learning to work as an autonomous collective and forge a new way for democracy to flourish.

We use hand signals to communicate as GAs so that everyone can be heard and no-one's voice is drowned out. These are explained at the beginning of each GA.

Our GAs are currently held on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm at 2011 North Charles St. This location can change so please check the calendar before leaving home. They are open to everyone and a great way to check out Occupy Baltimore. We would love to see you there.

Greetings. Something has been eating away at my mind and I just figured it out. I thought that getting in contact with you would be the best way to spread this information to the other Occupy movements. Let me explain something quickly before I get to the subject at hand. I keep away from being influenced by mainstream media, yet I keep apprised of the news on a pretty regular basis. By this method, I have realized this one very important thing. As you know, the people in power will target any and all occupy movements to discredit them, show them in a bad light, and represent the movement itself as being ineffective through various means.

I thought that I might be able to give the movement somewhat of a shield and pre-emptive planning to compensate for this. So here's what I came up with:

Many of the media companies are owned by the large corporations that the protestors are targeting. Though the anchors of some of the more liberal media (Ie... MSNBC, Rachel Maddow, Ed Shultz, Lawrence O'Donnel, etc...) still seem to be on the protestors side.... pay attention to the advertisements. Many are big oil. So we have a conflict of interest. Mainstream media could cover the protest without restriction when the big companies thought it to be more or less a joke, but now they are beginning to realize the seriousness and the massive scope of this discontent. They are getting nervous, and slowly starting to put the squeeze on everyone involved in media. They are getting nervous, and one can no longer rely on any local media to truthfully broadcast the scope and effectiveness of this movement.

We are at the beginning stages of an effective revolution, and will soon be moving into the first stages of a war of idea and intelligence, fought both online, and (as peacefully as possible) in person. I can give you some insight as to the movements of the larger companies, the political system and the financial sector. I've been keeping away from their influence while remaining keyed into their machinations. They are predictable, while the protest is not.

The revolution will win because of a single reason. They can change. Those in power have backed themselves into a corner and have no recourse except to repeat the same things over and over. The more they do, the less effective they will be.

Let me explain some of these tactics.

  • Mainstream media will be squeezed. The stories will target some of the less influential (and less intelligent) of the protestors. Camera angles will be edited to show only small groups of people and / or empty camps, etc...
  • Behind the scenes, this will continue to attempt to represent the movement as being less and less effective as time goes on.
  • Political groups in the cities which have the larger movements will form committees focused specifically on discrediting these groups. They will form think tanks to come up with new and unique ideas... but they won't come up with much simply because they are stuck in the aforementioned "hole".
  • The will try to dismantle the movement with force as we have already seen. But this only adds fuel to the fire at this point.
  • They will use any excuse, and use any method, such as cutting services and power to the parks that house the occupy movements.
  • The will use sympathetic networks to further discredit and condemn the movements and make it look like a futile effort, motivated by the homeless and jobless only.
  • Some latter steps they will take will be to hire programming professionals to hack into and either modify or take down Occupy or Solidarity websites and networks.
  • They may even keywork-pack these sites to get them automatically banned by the search engines, which have auto-shutdowns in place when their poicies are violated.
  • They will put up alternate websites to steal the traffic from the current occupy sites.
  • More of the latter steps they may use would be to pursue and arrest those unable to pay their bills / mortgage.

Some of these ideas are sketchy, I agree (partially because I'm pretty tired right now), but they should give an idea as to plan effectively against some of these tactics that could be used. I will also email this same message to a couple of the other movement websites in hopes that it gets spread around a little.

Because of THIS page and the front page and receiving a "cancellation" email that I DID NOT REQUEST. I JUST woke up this morning and found the front page and THIS page edited, I NO LONGER WANT EDITING CAPABILITIES TO THIS SITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi....many of you know me from earlier protests. I have started a website that targets the politicians and lawmaking...governing committees in a wide area with a blog that identifies issues that affects us on a local, state, and national level.

Visit the site...I'm still developing it. I hope to encourage everyone to fill these meetings, as you are already doing so well. Let me know what to add.

Thanks,

Cindy Walsh
